Project Summary
The Port of Vancouver is Canada’s largest and busiest port. Trade through the Port of Vancouver connects Canadian businesses and consumers with a variety of products used every day from markets across the globe.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is responsible for the stewardship of the lands and waters that make up the Port of Vancouver, enabling trade while protecting the environment and working with local communities.
The Port of Vancouver Discovery Centre serves multiple arms of the Port Authority, offering a space that transforms from visitor Discovery Centre, to education centre, to town hall meeting space, to event venue, and at times all in the same twenty-four hours.
Eos Lightmedia worked with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, as well as designers Waddell & Conder, content producers Burnkit, Resolve Design for the history wall, and fabricators Three Dimensional Services to design, supply and integrate the layers of lighting, audiovisual, software and controls technology that transform this environment into one of the facility most used spaces.
For school children, the space uses interactive, projection driven benches with embedded touch sensors to provide hands on education about the busy goings on of Canada’s largest port. Facilitators of the space can use Eos Lightmedia’s custom control software to change the vocabulary and content to make it suitable for both younger and more mature student groups.
With another click of a button on the facility’s sophisticated control system, the entire atmosphere of the room changes from its public setting to a sleek professional meeting room setting. The interactive touch panels break apart into bench seating for over 100, and the large digital map wall becomes the presentation screen for keynote speakers for the port authority’s many meetings, announcements, and group functions.
When open to the public at large, the space offers both an exciting high tech Discovery Centre with hundreds of square feet of projection mapped surfaces for interaction and digital informational kiosks Canada 150 and the port’s history. In contrast to the cutting edge technology, a stunning historical display case that spans the length of the facility, replete with artifacts from the ports long history in the city.
Broadcast quality lighting and audio equipment allows for events to be live-streamed in high definition with professional results without the need for off-site equipment rentals.
Every function within the Centre has its own custom lighting look controlled by DMX over the dedicated exhibit network within the space. The benches, their projectors, and the audio systems are all linked into the central control system, which automatically turns on and off with a preset, adjustable schedule. The various ‘scenes’ within the Centre can also be recalled instantly by the facilities operations team.
Whether for children, adults, tourists, locals, or port staff, the Port of Vancouver Discovery Centre serves all, transforming over and over with each day.
